Braces are dental tools used/recommended by orthodontists to correct crowded and misaligned teeth or jaws. For the longest time, a common assumption has been that dental braces are suitable only for kids. Another common assumption has been that braces only correct or enhance aesthetic appearance (s). These, however are not correct. Both kids and adults can have braces installed, and they serve quite a number of purposes.
Who Needs Braces?
Dental braces offer corrective treatment for people with:
- Overcrowded or crooked teeth
- Too much space between teeth
- Upper front teeth that overlap the lower teeth too much — either vertically (overbite) or horizontally (overjet)
- Upper front teeth that bite behind the lower ones (underbite)
- Other jaw misalignment problems that cause an uneven bite
Proper alignment of your teeth and jaws may improve not only the appearance of your teeth but also the health of your mouth and the way you bite, chew and speak.
Traditional Braces V.s Invincible Braces
Traditional braces are made of metal. In some cases, the brackets on traditional braces could be made of tooth colored ceramic. A lot of people who get braces don’t want others to see it, for the simple reason that it’s very conspicuous and pronounced.
That’s why a lot of people prefer invisible aligners. These are braces that blend in with your teeth and are inconspicuous and hard to spot.
Invisible braces are only compatible with a small percentage of patients. They are unsuitable for correcting severe misalignment or jaw issues. However they work great for minor gaps and crooked teeth.
Options are great. But an even greater good when getting braces would be to have effective and long-lasting final results. As such it is very important to consult with the orthodontist to see what the best recommendation for you might be.
Cost and Treatment
There really is no straight answer for how much braces cost and how long one would need to have them on for. Every dental practice has different prices, and the duration the braces need to stay on for depends on the current condition of your teeth.
However, one sure (slightly sad) fact is that dental braces aren’t cheap. Considering the fact that it has life-long benefits, it is definitely worth the investment.
